As an electrical contractor in Miami, every once in a while I’m faced with the dilemma of advising a customer whether to do an electrical panel upgrade or install a sub-panel. If the customer has a 200 amp, 30 circuit panel that is maxed out, but have needs for more circuits, which would be the best advise? Should I advise you get an electrical panel upgrade or install a sub-panel?

A few things to consider:

1 – Is the customer using close to the 200 amp capacity of their current panel?

2 – Is there space where the panel is located for a sub-panel to be installed?

3 – What is the new circuit needs in amps?

4 – Will there be needs for more circuits in the future?

5 – Can the existing electrical panel and the wires that feeds it handle the existing loads plus these new loads?

In answering these questions, the correct advise of ” Panel Upgrade or Sub-Panel ” should become obvious for the customer’s specific situation and needs. Would you agree?
